Protecting Our Planet:

The Critical Role of Soil and Land Resources in Sustainable Development and Environmental Stability

By Olga Pasko on Feb 4, 2025
Hear From the Editors:
Environmental aspects of soil and land resource protection are of great importance for the sustainable development of the entire human society, conservation of biodiversity and provision, and ensuring environmental stability in the modern world. The subject of this collective monograph highlights scientists’ research from twelve countries; including Vietnam, Germany, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Russia, the USA, Tajikistan, Turkey and the Philippines. Russia is represented by cities: St. Petersburg, Moscow, Tomsk, and Yevpatoriya. In the course of creating this research, a team of like-minded scientists has been formed, the core of which is the National Open Institute of St. Petersburg. Its efforts created a picture of the current state of the problem under study as a whole and showed its regional features in particular.
The presented review demonstrates the need for more careful monitoring of soils and land state to prevent negative anthropogenic impacts on nature. The task is complicated by climate change and the growth of resource consumption by society. An important link in assessing the state and protecting soil and land resources is their monitoring. It is a system of observations, assessment and forecasting aimed at obtaining reliable information on the state of the land, its quantitative and qualitative characteristics, its use and the state of soil fertility. Optimization of soil and land resource management requires an integrated approach and the involvement of various parties in the decision-making process. It is important to strive for sustainable use of resources and the development of environmentally sustainable technologies to maintain a balance between ecosystems and human needs. Only in this way can we provide future generations with favourable conditions for life on the planet. The data obtained allowed us to formulate problems and propose solutions for their timely adoption of effective operational measures to preserve and improve the environmental and economic value of soil and land resources. The research results are of great practical and theoretical importance, as well as great development prospects. The chapters of the monograph can be conventionally combined into three sections: “Soil and land resources as an integral part of ecosystems and their interaction with other components of the natural environment”; “Monitoring the state of soils, lands and vegetation using modern technological and hardware-software complexes” and “Problems associated with ecosystem disturbances, deficiencies in scientific and linguistic communication and ways to solve them”. The monograph emphasizes the need for collective international action and informed decision-making, which is characteristic of the long-term unifying scientific and information policy of the IGI publication.
