Introduction

Behavioral addictions comprise a spectrum of problematic and pathological behaviors distinct from chemical substances and require increased attention and understanding within behavioral health care. While substance use disorders have long been acknowledged, the prevalence of behavioral addictions presents unique challenges and implications for behavioral health professionals, particularly in recognizing and addressing these addictive patterns. Given the prevalence of addictive disorders and comorbidity with mental health disorders, it is very likely that behavioral health professionals will encounter clients experiencing significant impairment as a result of a behavioral addiction.

Objective

This book delves into the multifaceted world of behavioral addictions, exploring their significance, symptoms, and treatment options. It provides a comprehensive overview of various forms of behavioral addiction, including gambling, gaming, shopping, love and romance, sex and pornography and social media use, examining how these behaviors can become compulsive and interfere with daily life creating distress for individuals, relationships and families. Through a combination of case studies, expert insights, and the latest research findings, the book highlights the psychological, social, and neurobiological factors that contribute to the development of these addictions. Each chapter not only discusses the impact of behavioral addictions on individuals and families but also offers practical strategies for recognizing, preventing, and addressing these issues. By fostering a deeper understanding of behavioral addictions, this book aims to equip behavioral health professionals with the knowledge necessary to promote awareness, support affected individuals, and advocate for effective treatment options in their communities.

Target Audience

By bridging empirical evidence with practical insights, the book aims to equip the broad range of behavioral health care professionals with a comprehensive understanding of behavioral addictions and inspire a deeper commitment to the development of competencies in this critical area of behavioral health practice. This book is also being written with the intent of being utilized as a primary text within graduate programs that train behavioral health care professionals including counselors, social workers, addiction counselors, etc.
