Description & Coverage
Description:

Spatial analytical techniques and geographical analysis and modelling methods are required in order to analyse data and to facilitate the decision process at all levels. Old geographical issues can find an answer thanks to new methods and instruments, while new issues are developing, challenging the researchers for new solutions.

Geographic Information Analysis for Sustainable Development and Economic Planning: New Technologies tackles topics related to, to-date development of Geographic Information in terms of the technologies available for retrieving, managing, and analyzing geographical data. This book is useful for academic staff, as well as postgraduate students (MSc, PhD levels) in GIS, remote sensing, economic geography, spatial planning, geostatistics, and related fields.

Coverage:

The many academic areas covered in this publication include, but are not limited to:

  • Geographic Information (GI) for Urban Analysis and Planning
  • Geographic Information Analysis
  • Geographic Information, Safety and Security
  • Geostatistics and Spatial Statistics
  • GI Analysis for Business, Management and Market Planning
  • GI for Environmental and Health Monitoring
  • GI for Sustainable Development
  • Spatial Decision Support Theory
  • Spatial Econometrics
  • Spatial Multicriteria Decision Analysis
Reviews & Statements

Primarily Italian researchers apply spatial-economic analysis techniques to estimating urban sprawl in Salerno and Benevento, land degradation in Southern Italy, green spaces in Catania, non-native resident populations, and the effect of rail accessibility on real estate prices. A pair of papers from Canada compare component-based multivariate regression models of cardiac disease with variable-based models and measure the spatial accessibility to healthcare services among Aboriginal peoples in Alberta. Other topics of the 23 papers include NASA datasets as inputs to hydrological models, a density-based algorithm for spatial data mining, mobile phone network data, and cultural heritage management at the local level.

Editor/Author Biographies
Giuseppe Borruso is Junior Lecturer in Economic Geography with the Faculty of Economics of the University of Trieste (Italy) since 2005. He teaches Cartography and GIS, Geography of Networks, Business Geography, and carries on research on urban and transport geography, retail geography, population geography, GIS and cartography, spatial analysis, and GIS (geostatistics). On these topics he is author of more than 40 papers in national and international journals and reviews, as well as in proceedings of national and international conferences. He is member of Scientific Council of the Associazione Italiana di Cartografia (AIC: Italian Cartographic Association) and of ASITA (Federation of the Scientific Association for Geographical and Environmental Information Systems). He is also co-founder of the Geographical Analysis, Urban Modelling, Spatial Statistics group, acting at international level and regularly producing workshops within ICCSA (International Conference on Computational Science and its Applications) events.
Stefania Bertazzon joined the Department of Geography at the University of Calgary in 2001. She completed her Master degree at the University of Venice in 1992, and her PhD at Calgary in 1998. Stefania's research interests are in spatial analysis and its health, social, and environmental applications. She has developed reliable spatial analytical models for health, environmental, economic, and social sciences, integrating spatial epidemiology, risk analysis, and spatio-temporal diffusion analysis. She is part of several interdisciplinary teams, working on a range of health, social, and environmental projects.
Andrea Favretto is Associate Professor with the Department of Human Studies of the University of Trieste, Italy. He holds courses on Cartography and Geographical Information Systems. His research interests span from human impact of urban activities to cartography and landscape transformations, analyzed by means of GIS and remote sensing techniques. He is vice president of the Associazione Italiana di Cartografia (AIC: Italian Cartographic Association) and member of the board of ASITA (Federation of the Scientific Association for Geographical and Environmental Information Systems).
Beniamino Murgante is a Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the School of Engineering, University of Basilicata. He earned his PhD in “Science and Methods for European Cities and Territories” from the University of Pisa in 2004. Since 2015, he has held his current academic position, following a tenure as a researcher at the same institution from 2006 to 2015. Prof. Murgante has extensive experience in project management, having led various significant projects such as LOCARBO, MEV-CSU, SMART Basilicata, and MITIGO, funded by national and international programs. His research focuses on urban planning, spatial analysis, and public participation GIS (PPGIS) to support sustainable urban development and government transparency. He has a strong publication record with an H-index of 38 and over 4,500 citations, and he serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals. Prof. Murgante is also an active member of various scientific committees and has delivered keynote speeches at numerous international conferences. His contributions to the field are recognized globally, reflecting his commitment to advancing urban and regional planning through innovative research and collaboration.
Carmelo Maria Torre was born in 1966. He is a Civil Engineer, with an MSc in Construction Engineering, PhD in Evaluation Methods for Architectural, Urban, and Environmental Integrated Conservation. Since 2002, He has been a Junior Researcher at the Department of Architecture and Planning, Bari Polytechnic. He serves as Professor-in-Charge in Economic Evaluation of plans, and in estimating, among other positions.
