Abstract

The Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region plays a crucial part in driving the global halal trade forward. Several ASEAN member states are recognized as leaders in driving the global halal industry. As a result, ASEAN has the potential to lead and set the benchmark for a sustainable halal supply chain worldwide, particularly through the integration of circular economy principles and reverse logistics practices. Through study literature and netnography, this chapter describes the implementation of circular economy and reverse logistics in the halal industry by taking case studies in the ASEAN-3, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam. This chapter focuses on: (1) The circularity in manufacturing of the halal industry within ASEAN-3; (2) The reverse logistics practice of the halal industry in ASEAN-3; (3) The challenges for the sustainable halal supply chain, by providing examples of implemented cases studies and policy recommendations. This chapter also maps the 19Rs circularity in sustainable halal supply chains and various technologies to support them.
